Description

In the Lot department, ten minutes from medieval merchant town of Figeac, at the crossroads of important pilgrimage routes (Camino, Chemin du Puy ...). Champollion Museum in honour of the eponymous Egyptologist (of Rosetta's stone). Also nice: Cahors, old town with caves and the impressive limestone plateaux of Parc naturel régional des Causses du Quercy, protected UNESCO Géoparc.

From the long driveway, you discern in the distance, on the hill, the house surrounded by oaks. This used to be a tuilerie, where roof tiles were made by hand, formed on the knee and dried. The original construction with stacked stones was beautifully preserved. When renovating ('12-'13), the current owners were inspired by John Pawson's minimalist architecture: back to basics, according to modern ecological requirements. This pared-down elegance, where wood and stone predominate, feels very natural and beneficial - a treat for the eye as well as the soul. Less is obviously more here.

Imagine gourmet enjoyment with ultra-fresh, home-grown fruit and vegetables in this kitchen that feels both ancient and modern at the same time. Also on the ground floor: two spacious bedrooms, toilet and bathroom (shower, washbasin). Laundry and storage room. Garage with space for one car - or will you turn it into a workshop? Stairs to the relaxation area under the beautiful roof. Garden with vegetable garden, fruit trees, powerful panoramic views and lovely terrace under the grapevine/wisteria.

owner speaks out

When we first came here, in 2010, we did not yet know the Lot, but we were immediately charmed by the beauty, tranquillity and simplicity of this department. We had just turned sixty and were retired, and in this region we found what we were looking for: silence, impressive views and a unique location, isolated in harmony with nature. We looked for two years in this region before we found this house, the place that managed to combine all our desires. Either it still needed too much work, or there were too many other houses nearby.... But Le Suquet La Tuilerie immediately charmed us with its ancient oak trees and beautiful location.

When renovating, John Pawson was our inspiration. We brought the house back to its essence, with lots of wood and stone. In order to preserve or restore the individuality of the building as much as possible, we worked with local artisans, people who really know the region and this land.

As city people, our daily walks became literally and figuratively a breath of fresh air: picking wild herbs, our fruit trees, just fantastic.... The idea of permaculture increasingly seeped into our lives, and so we gradually shaped our vegetable garden. Now we follow the seasons and taste something different every month: truffles, grapes, nuts, mushrooms, herbs for tea ... Delicious. Eggs, meat and flour are bought from local farmers, many of whom work organically. The vineyards of Quercy, new generation Cahors wine ... - this really is a region for people who like good food. We also regularly enjoy a wonderful spectacle of deer, squirrels, brebis (sheep) or a fox passing by. At the same time, ten minutes away, in the village, you will find all daily amenities. With the protected natural park of Quercy, beautiful towns, historical sites and caves all around, there is always something to do here. The village itself has only about eighty inhabitants, half of whom are second-stayers.

Meanwhile, this place has become even more unique, as it is now protected and you can no longer just get planning permission here.

For family reasons, we are now closing this period. We are happy to pass the house on to someone who appreciates the impressive views, nature and beauty and silence just as much.
