Description

On the Melaan, right behind the Vismarkt with its cosy terraces. Super quiet and yet right in the centre.

Even before you enter, you will be amazed. The entrance to the flats is through the beautiful courtyard garden. The loft flat is on the top floor of this sublimely restored ‘Hooghuys’, a Unesco listed monument. The lift and stairs lead directly into the absolutely unique loft.

To the left is the bathroom (with bath, shower and double sink) and then 2 bedrooms. One of them is now open, but can easily be closed off with a wall. Furthermore, here are a toilet, 2 separate storage rooms, an extra guest toilet and an office space with terrace. Thanks to the sliding harmonica windows, outside becomes inside here and vice versa. Relax on your private terrace with a view of the St Rombouts tower! Who can say that?

The enormous living space is under the roof, with beautifully preserved roof trusses. In the middle is the open kitchen, above which is a glass mezzanine that can serve perfectly as a 3rd bedroom, chill space, reading corner...

In summer, air conditioning provides cooling, original elements such as interior shutters complete the picture. Need extra comfort? There is the possibility of purchasing a double car parking space. Also handy: an extra storage room on the ground floor. Finally, it is also blissful outside, thanks to the beautiful communal courtyard garden.

The perfect mix of architecture and history, in an unrivalled location in the city.

Adembenemende loft met terras in historisch monument

The owners,

owner speaks out

As an architectural firm, it was a privilege to be able to restore a building like the Hooghuys. This is one of the oldest buildings in Mechelen and it is on the Unesco heritage list. We were therefore very happy to accommodate our office in the prestigious penthouse on the top floor. The restoration was based on two elements: respect for heritage and dialogue between old and new. We created an open space by removing the partition walls of the old nunnery rooms. In addition, the beam structure was repaired and restored. Finally, the pointed roof was insulated along the outside. We absolutely wanted to keep the beautiful beam structure visible.
