Curious about the context in which brute force and solid materials go hand in hand with spontaneity, cosiness and intimacy? We are happy to let architect Paul Schellekens have his say, in and about one of his own creations: An architectural house designed in 1975, offered by Immodôme.

Paul Schellekens was hugely fascinated in Brutalist architecture as a youngster and was in the right place at the time in a Turnhout architecture firm that fully embraced the direction. It typified that period when the younger offices in Turnhout were given complete carte blanche by their clients.

His fascination with Brutalism stemmed from its conviviality, but equally from the cràcht that comes from this architecture. A spontaneous ‘nothing must be done’ atmosphere typifies this style, according to Schellekens, and the house in Beerse radiates this completely.

The house in Beerse, designed by arch. Paul Schellekens himself, is a fine example of brutalist architecture. Brick and concrete, two bold materials that typify the tremendously brutalist force, are used both inside and outside this house.

These materials are by no means the only modern features present in the house. For instance, brick and concrete, together with the windows in the ceiling, greenery that grows freely as desired and a spiral staircase in solid carpet, share the main role in the entrance hall.

“Intimate, brutal and... cosy.”

The strength of this house are the height differences in the various rooms.

This creates the necessary intimacy and cosiness, which one might not immediately link to the modern architectural style. So you have a lower ceiling with the work corner above it, in the daytime sitting area a view of the garden and next to it the dining area with the round window.
